SIXTH FORM SUBJECTS
AS and A2 LEVEL

CHEMISTRY: AS + A2 LEVEL [EDEXCEL]

Course aims to:

  • Stimulate and sustain students' interest in and enjoyment of chemistry
  • Enable students to gain a knowledge and understanding of chemistry appropriate to and beyond the A Level specification
  • Study contemporary issues affected by chemical concepts, such as Green Chemistry, the chemistry of the atmosphere, pharmaceuticals and chemical research
  • Equip students with the skills, knowledge and undertsanding necessary for a range of university courses, including Chemistry, Medicine, Biochemistry, Veterinary Science and Dentistry

AS Level Units are as follows:

Unit Key concepts studied
Unit 1
  • The Mole concept
  • Energetics
  • Atomic structure
  • Simple chemical bonding
  • Simple organic chemistry:  alkanes and alkenes
Unit 2
  • Advanced chemical bonding and intermolecular forces
  • The chemistry of Group 2 and Group 7 elements
  • Simple thermodynamics and kinetics
  • Simple redox chemistry
  • Further organic chemistry: alcohols and halogenoalkanes
Unit 3
  • Practical assessments covering the content of Units 1 and 2

Assessment:  The AS will be assessed by three examinations and practical coursework
