headTEACHER's greeting

Since its founding in 1546, Colyton Grammar School has enjoyed a long and distinguished history.  As the only grammar school within a 50 mile radius, we offer a selective education to pupils in the top 25% of the ability range.

The school has a tradition of high academic expectation, nurtured by a culture which values achievement in all activities and supports fully the development of each student to achieve success, gain self confidence and be equipped as independent learners, ready to take their place as responsible 21st century citizens.

The school has one of the finest academic records in the country.   In GCSE and at A-Level, the success rates far exceed national averages and are significantly higher than average for grammar schools.

In national performance tables, Colyton Grammar School is consistently amongst the leading co-educational selective schools in the country and in 2000, 2002, 2006 and 2007, was named by The Sunday Times as 'Co-educational School of the Year'.  The school has been described as ‘Outstanding’ by OFSTED in three successive reports.  Colyton Grammar has been awarded 'Leading Edge' status by the DCSF and was recognised as a ‘Highly Performing Specialist School’ in 2008.  It has been a Specialist Science College since 2003.

The school is a Trust school.  The South West Academic Trust includes four other selective schools in the South West and the University of Exeter.  The school serves students from the Axe Valley and also from East Devon, Somerset and Dorset.  Although it has expanded in the last decade, the annual intake number is targeted to preserve the intimate sense of community in which each member is known and valued.

Set in very attractive grounds of over eighteen acres, facilities are excellent and there is a continuous programme of development.  There have been major improvements in all curriculum areas over the last decade, including provision of attractive and spacious Study Centres for Sixth Form students; new netball courts, sports hall, art centre and a recent major investment in Design and Technology facilities.

The school makes good use of ICT, including video conferencing to support links with other schools and a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

Dedicated and well qualified staff ensure that students enjoy the challenge of aiming high and achieving their very best.  OFSTED inspectors judged that the school is remarkable for the extent of high quality teaching.   “Excellent and often inspiring teaching ensures that students make exceptional progress.  A strong work ethic pervades.  Teaching is confident and authoritative, and purposeful learning is based on a partnership between teacher and student”.

Do not hesitate to contact me should you wish to visit the school, for no prospectus can replace first-hand experience of this well-ordered but stimulating community.
