The teaching programme seeks to meet the needs of a student intake which is relatively able. Since 2003, all students have completed Key Stage 3 in two years, followed by their two year GCSE exam courses. Students then have access to a 3-year Sixth Form, providing more time for in-depth study and a range of extra-curricular activities. In addition, 2008 saw the launch of the innovative English Baccalaureate Diploma (AQA Bacc) qualification, which all students follow in addition to their traditional A-Level courses.
Key Stage 3
Students follow the broadest possible curriculum.
Subjects studied include English, Mathematics, Science, Technology, French or German, Art, Music, Drama, Information Technology, History, Geography, Religious Education and Physical Education.
Individual music tuition is available on a wide range of instruments.
The programme aims to meet individual needs and interests, while providing a balance that avoids premature specialisation.
All students take the national curriculum core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science, together with French (or German), Technology, Religious Education and Physical Education.
A further two subjects are selected from Art, Music, Drama, German, History, ICT and Geography.
There is a strong emphasis on the use of ICT across the curriculum.
The tutorial programme includes Careers Education and Citizenship.
The total number of students following A-Levels is amongst the highest in Devon schools, and the school takes pride in achieving consistently high standards. Almost all students go on to university.
The three-year sixth form gives students an opportunity to develop their academic interests and extra-curricular pursuits in a way that a conventional two-year programme would not.
Students study a programme which involves four A-levels of their own choosing, General Studies A-level, Critical Thinking AS-level, as well as the Extended Project Qualification and the AQA Baccalaureate.
The two spacious Study Centres provide Sixth Formers with excellent facilities for independent study, including an ICT network suite for use in private study.
It is a key part of the policy to encourage and promote the development of maturity and self-reliance, through fostering good study habits supported by careful monitoring of progress.
